Let’s face it: As cute as your children are – and we bet they’re adorable – when you take photos of them they probably look just like everyone else’s kids, to a certain extent. The similarity of poses and the fact that kids tend to do the same sorts of things, in general, mean that it’s very difficult to get their true individual spirit to come out in a still photo. Your photos certainly look wonderful to you, because they’re your kids, but others don’t seem too moved by them.
The trick is to get your kids into unusual photos so that even people who aren’t terribly familiar with their personalities have a chance to be wowed by them. Here are a few simple ideas for taking photos of your children and making them into the sort of photo canvas pieces that jump out at people and make them notice.
Idea 1: A Photoshopped Photo Canvas
It’s the 21st Century – let’s not be limited by the actual places your kids can go. Years ago you could pay a company to print out short books with favourite children’s book characters going through a story where your child was the main character, and kids loved it. Now you can go one step further by Photoshopping your child into any fantastic world you wish. A film, a TV show, a book, a cartoon – it doesn’t matter. A few clicks on the computer and you have a child’s portrait where their imagination is the background.
Idea 2: Macro Photos on Kids
Macro photography is the art of getting extremely close and magnified – and there’s no reason it can’t be used on your kids to get some incredibly unique shots. A close up photo canvas of an eye with those incredibly long baby lashes, a baby’s toes, or any other tiny detail that you think is representative in some way of your children’s personalities and presence will work just fine. Create a collage of macro-inspired shots to paint a picture of your kids more thoroughly than any single image could possibly ever achieve, and you have an art installation that will really wow people.
Idea 3: Cut Loose
Here’s an example of a print on the wall that immediately diffuses tension and makes people relax. Note how it doesn’t take it self seriously at all, yet welcomes people in and dresses up the space?
That’s what photos of your kids can do. Let them be silly! Make faces, stick out tongues, be goofy. The goofier, in fact, the better. Then do some simple dress up with black and white filters or other tricks, and turn these goofy moments into bespoke images for your walls that class up the place while also telling guests that this is a fuss-free zone where they’re free to relax, forget the rules, and simply enjoy themselves.
