If you’re ever on the Internet, you’ve likely read about the ‘poop baby’ incident, wherein a young father in Kent, England was having some professional photos taken of himself and his newborn son, who promptly pooped all over his father just as the photographer was snapping a gorgeous black and white photo.
Rather than disposing of the offending photo or keeping it as a private joke, the father decided to release the photo to the world and it quickly became a viral hit. For anyone who has ever tried to take their own baby photos to turn into a photo canvas or other decorative item in the home, this is probably a familiar scenario to some extent. There’s a lot of lessons to be learned here regarding babies and photographs.
Lesson One: Babies are Chaos
Babies haven’t yet learned the rules. As far as they’re concerned, there are no rules – regarding pooping or any other bodily function. That is, after all, why the nappy was invented. But they also haven’t yet learned any of the rules, which means their behaviour is impossible to control or even predict. If you’re going to take some portraits of your baby to make into a photo canvas for your wall or any other use, be prepared for things to go awry.
Lesson Two: Nothing is Wrong for a Photo Canvas
Just because your baby photo didn’t turn out precisely as you might have wished doesn’t mean it’s inappropriate for your walls – in fact, the crazier the image, sometimes the better. After all, a peaceful, sleeping baby makes for a photo that looks exactly like every other baby in the world. A pooping baby? That’s distinctive, and unique.
So, you may not want to share a pooping photo with the world (or even just your friends) and that’s understandable. But the point really is that your baby photos don’t have to be perfect to be beautiful on your walls.
Lesson Three: Just Keep Snapping
Finally, the poop baby incident demonstrates the value of taking a lot of photos. If you try to arrange things perfectly and snap just one photo, inevitably that will be the moment that your baby decides to poop everywhere. On the other hand, if you’re taking a lot of photos you can regard the poop shot as a fun extra moment you captured, because you’ll have a ton of other photos with less ‘spice’ to them to use. The lesson’s simple: Take a lot of photos when seeking the ideal baby pic!
Babies are adorable, unpredictable, frustrating, and lovable. They make for the perfect photographic subjects whether we hang their photos in the living room or keep them in our wallets. But you can’t control babies, or know how they will react to different situations – all you can do is be ready with the camera.
